Questions
Question: How long will a metal roof last?
Answer:

A quality metal roof installed today can be expected to maintain its beauty and functionality for more than 50 years. Copper roofing can be expected to last in excess of 100 years. Most metal roofing manufacturers will provide product warranties of 20-30 years covering paint fading, chalking, chipping, cracking and peeling, and provide 40-50 year warranties against rust perforation of the painted metal panels

Question: What are some of the benefits of metal roofing?
Answer:
Low Maintenance
No Moss
No Fire Danger
No Snow, Leaf, or Needle Build-up
No Cracking or Curling
50 - 60 Year Life on Painted Panels

Question: What warranty do Taylor Metal Products systems carry?
Answer: We offer a 30 year paint warranty along with a 50 year rust perforation warranty, on our painted metal panels.
Metal roofing is suited
to every climate and

heat, resists snow,
ice buildup and sheds
rain like an umbrella.
Once properly
installed, a metal roof

Question: Why concealed fasteners?
Answer: Most metal roofing uses exposed fasteners with a neoprene seal. However, expansion/contraction ovoids the fastener holes and sunlight shrinks the washer.  Hence, exposed fastener roofing eventually leaks.  The roofing panels designed by Taylor Metal Products have concealed fasteners which are not exposed and cannot leak - ever.

Question: What is the recommended application?
Answer: Taylor Metal Products recommends laying panels over solid sheathing with 30 lb. felt between panel and substrate.  We suggest removing wood shakes/shingles and installing panels over the skip sheathing using a vapor barrier paper.  If applying over other roofing materials, your substrate needs to provide solid fastening and a flat surface for uniformity in panel appearance.

Question: How do I treat valleys, walls, vent pipes, skylights, fireplaces, etc.?
Answer: Taylor Metal Products manufacturers and sells all necessary flashings and accessories for a total metal roofing package.  When a standard flashing will not do, we will make a custom one to provide full roof protection.

Question: How does the cost compare to other roofing options?
Answer:

On a functional life basis, metal roofing generally costs one-third less than composition roofing materials and is approximately one-fourth to one-half the cost of tile, shake or slate roofs.

Question: Besides being fireproof, are there other safety advantages to a metal roof?
Answer: Steel roofs have the greatest strength per pound of any roofing material. Strong but lightweight, they are well designed to handle heavy snow and ice loads, and actually improve structural strength - important in earthquake and high-wind areas. In fact, a properly designed and installed metal roof will withstand extreme wind conditions with wind speeds of up to 140 miles per hour.

Question: How does a metal roof rank from an ecological viewpoint?
Answer: Steel is the most recycled metal on earth and can be reused almost indefinitely without compromising its quality or strength. This environmentally friendly material is 100% recyclable - composition shingles: zero percent. According to the National Association of Home Builders, composition roofing materials make up more than 5% (1.36 billion pounds) of the waste dumped in landfills each year. In addition, over ten million barrels of oil are used each year in the production of new composition roofing materials.

Question: Is there any maintenance required?
Answer: Not only are the leaves, needles and moss that accumulate on other roofing systems unsightly, but they will shorten the life of most roofs. Steel roofs, with their inherent smoothness, practically clean themselves. Most manufacturers recommend an annual freshwater rinsing to remove rain and air borne pollutants.

Question: What about noise from rain and hail?
Answer:

A metal roof installed over a solid substructure is no noisier than a typical composition roof. In a modern home, most precipitation noise is caused by rain or hail on skylights and roof vents.

Question: What are the pitch requirements for a metal roof?
Answer:

Amazingly, quite low: as little as 1/2:12 (1/2" to the foot) for standing seam metal roofs - a definite benefit for many low-pitch applications. Most other roofing systems require minimum pitches of 3:12.

Question: Is it really suited to our weather?
Answer:

Metal roofing is suited to every climate and season. It reflects heat, resists snow and ice buildup and sheds rain like an umbrella. Once properly installed, a metal roof forms a single-ply membrane over your home, leaving no place for water to penetrate. Metal roofing is truly "all-weather gear" for your home.

Question: Can you walk on a metal roof?
Answer:

With a 26 gauge or thicker steel roof applied over a solid backing, no denting should occur. Softer metals, such as copper, aluminum and lighter-gauge steel, may be susceptible to denting. When on the roof it is recommended that you wear soft-soled shoes for both traction and protection of the finish. You should not attempt to walk on any wet roof.

Question: Does it need additional structural support?
Answer:

No. Metal roofs weigh considerably less: one-half to one-third the weight of a typical composition roof, and one-third to one-eighth of a slate or tile roof. Metal roofing has the same minimum structural requirements as a standard composition roof, and considerably less than those for tile, cement or slate roofing materials.

Question: Can it be installed over an existing roof?
Answer:

In most cases a metal roof can be installed over composition roofing materials. The condition of the roofing substructure will be a factor and the building codes in your area will dictate the number of roofing layers allowed. Because of its light weight, relative to all other roofing systems, many local codes will allow installation of a metal roof over multiple roofing layers where other systems would be prohibited.

Question: Can I install it myself?
Answer:

Many homeowners have installed their own metal roofs. There are many factors to consider in making the decision as to whether or not to install a metal roof yourself. The most obvious considerations include: roof size and complexity, construction skills, access to the required tools, available helpers and adequate time. Two other critical considerations are safety and the fact that installation errors may void the manufacturer's warranty. Because they are experienced, bonded, insured and provide a labor warranty in addition to the manufacturer's warranty, professional roofing contractors are usually the surest, safest and most cost effective way to have a metal roof installed.
